Dad's last request

My father passed away in March of 2003. Our entire family was with him at the hospital just days before he took his last breath. We all rotated shifts from hospital room to waiting room as family and friends offered their support. As I walked in to see dad with mom at his bedside dad pops the question, Mikey where's the doughnuts, what doughnuts, I asked? The KRISPY KREME ones you like to eat. This request came at a time when my father had not had any appetite, he had thrown in the towel on his life on earth and somehow manages to get excited again about having a doughnut. Mom and I stare at each other in disbelief. I quickly joined the rest of the family in the waiting room and told my brother Edgar about dad's request. I asked him should we get him a doughnut? Not only will we get him a doughnut we'll get him a KK DOUGHNUT just like he asked! That's when my brother took off, in heavy traffic and over an hour drive in the rain for his destination, Issaquah, Wa. The only KK in the state at the time, that we new of. Over 2 hours later he returns with KK DOUGHNUTS for everybody, he bought dozens of doughnuts for family, friends, nurses and people we didn't even know. It was a celebration! Dad got his wish, he devoured it and took great pleasure in doing so. What had previously been a real sad time suddenly turned to joy over the indulgence of KRISPY KREME doughnuts. It would be my dad's last meal. For years I've contemplated on whether or not to write you about this story and finally said, why not! Whenever we treat ourselves to KK doughnuts it brings back special memories... ps. Somewhere, on an old computer, I have a picture of dad enjoying his last KK doughnut. thanks for your time.
